Instagram announced in December 2025 that posts and Reels can carry no more than five hashtags. For years creators were told to use up to thirty, so many saved lists are now too long. This guide explains what to do. Because rollouts can differ, check Instagram's Help Center for the current rule on your account.

What changed

Instagram introduced a platform limit of five hashtags per post or Reel, announced in December 2025 and rolled out globally. Reports indicated that posts with more than five would be blocked from publishing until the extra tags were removed. If your old routine involved pasting a long block, you will need to shorten it.

Why a cap is not bad news

A cap pushes everyone towards relevance. When you can only use five, each tag has to describe the post. Instagram has also said it uses the content of the post, captions and other signals to understand it, so a long list was never the main factor.

How to choose your five

Try this pattern: one broad topic tag, two specific tags that describe the subject, one audience or format tag and one location or community tag. For a beginner yoga video, that could be #yoga, #yogaforbeginners, #morningyoga, #yogaathome and a city tag.

Convert your old lists

Take a saved list of 30 tags and delete everything that does not describe the post. Then rank what remains and keep five. Save the leftover tags in groups so you can rotate them for other posts.

Use the tools on this site

Every topic page has a 'Copy best 5' button that picks a balanced starter set, and the hashtag counter and formatter tool shows whether your set is within the limit. Always review the five before posting.

Turn an old 30-tag list into a five-tag set

Open one of your old hashtag blocks and classify every tag as broad topic, specific subject, audience, format or location. Delete anything that does not fit the actual post. Then choose the five that add the most distinct information. This is a useful exercise because it exposes duplicates: five near-identical tags rarely tell the reader five different things. Save the remaining relevant tags in separate notes for other posts rather than assuming they all belong in the same upload.
