YouTube Tags by Video Type

YouTube tags are the hidden keywords you add in YouTube Studio. The whole field is limited to 500 characters, so each set below is sized to fit. Copy one, then edit it to match your video.

Tags are not hashtags

Hashtags are visible and clickable, and YouTube ignores hashtags when a video has more than 60. Tags are hidden and are mostly useful for spelling variations and related phrases. Read our guide onYouTube tags vs hashtags, or build a custom set with theYouTube tag generator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between YouTube tags and hashtags?

Tags are a hidden field in YouTube Studio with a 500-character limit. Hashtags are visible #words in the title or description; YouTube ignores all hashtags if a video has more than 60 and shows the first three above the title.

How many YouTube tags should I use?

There is no required number, but the whole field cannot exceed 500 characters including commas. Many creators use five to fifteen focused tags. Tags have a small effect compared with your title, thumbnail and description.

Should I copy another video's tags?

Only if they accurately describe your video. Tags that do not match the content are unhelpful and can be seen as misleading.
